Say Goodbye to Rough Skin—How to Get the Most from Your Sugar Scrub

Most of us have a shower routine that includes the basics: shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. But adding a sugar scrub can elevate your skincare game, helping to improve hydration and give your skin a noticeable glow. We spoke with a professional esthetician to explain why sugar scrubs are worth including in your routine and how to use them properly.

What Exactly Is a Sugar Scrub?

A sugar scrub is made by combining granulated sugar with moisturizing ingredients like plant-based oils or butters. Some scrubs also include natural extracts or essential oils for added benefits. The main purpose is physical exfoliation—removing dead skin cells to reveal smoother, softer skin underneath.

“When your skin is exfoliated, it absorbs moisturizers and other skincare products more effectively,” says Ginille Brown, an esthetician based in Los Angeles. “Sugar scrubs are generally safe for all skin types and tones, including darker skin, and can help even out skin texture.”

How to Use a Sugar Scrub the Right Way

While sugar scrubs are simple to use, there are a few essential tips to ensure your skin stays healthy and radiant. The key rule: be gentle. Pressing too hard or scrubbing for too long can cause irritation or uneven pigmentation.

Step 1: Wet Your Skin Always apply the scrub to damp skin. This reduces friction and prevents over-exfoliation.

Step 2: Use the Right Amount A quarter-sized amount is usually enough for the face, while larger areas like arms and legs may require more. “You can adjust the quantity depending on your skin’s needs. Using less can also help your scrub last longer,” Brown advises.

Step 3: Massage Gently Rub the scrub in circular motions for one to two minutes, applying light to moderate pressure. Focus on rougher areas such as elbows, knees, and heels, and use less on naturally smooth or sensitive areas like the chest and inner arms. The goal is effective exfoliation without irritation.

Step 4: Rinse Off Rinse the scrub thoroughly with warm water. There’s no need to leave it on for long—the process works quickly, and prompt rinsing prevents potential irritation.

Why It Matters Using a sugar scrub regularly can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s texture, helping it feel softer, smoother, and more luminous. It’s a simple addition to your routine that supports healthy, well-nourished skin.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your shower routine or give your skin a gentle refresh, a sugar scrub is an easy, effective way to maintain radiant, touchable skin.
